Best Lighting Setup for Compact Workshops
April 2026 · 6 min read
Lighting is the most underestimated upgrade in any workshop. A single dim overhead bulb creates shadows exactly where you're cutting — and eye strain that adds up over every project. A proper lighting setup costs $150–$400 and makes your shop feel twice as professional immediately.

Every layout includes a dedicated lighting zone plan — task lighting, ambient, and safety positions.

Layer 1: Ambient (General) Lighting
LED shop lights mounted to the ceiling, spaced to eliminate shadows across the full floor. Use 4000K–5000K color temperature (daylight) for accurate color rendering. Minimum 50 foot-candles at floor level.
Recommended: 4×4ft LED shop light fixtures, linked or daisy-chained
Layer 2: Task Lighting
Directed lighting directly above every work zone — workbench, table saw, router table, assembly area. Positioned to light the work surface without glare in your eyes.
Recommended: Under-cabinet LED strips or adjustable arm lights at each station
Layer 3: Safety Lighting
Adequate light near emergency exits, fire extinguisher, and first aid kit. Never rely on overhead lighting to illuminate these — shadows are unpredictable.
Recommended: Plug-in LED strips or battery-backup lights near safety equipment
